How to Pay for College If you plan on going to college, it's going to cost a lot of money. That's why you will want to plan ahead and apply for financial aid. Financial aid can come from a number of places: The federal government, the state government, colleges, educational associations, and the credit union. There are three basic types of financial aid:
- Grants - These are gifts that you don't have to pay back. Some are scholarships based on talent or abilities, for example, athletic skill or academic achievement.
- Work-study - This is a part-time job, typically on the campus of the college you are attending. Money you earn on the job helps pay for things like tuition, books, supplies, and housing.
- Loans - Loans are money that you borrow to use for your expenses that you will have to pay back.
Typically, grants, work-study, loans, or a combination of these types of financial aid won't pay for everything. Families and students themselves usually have to pay for part of college expenses. You apply for financial aid during your senior year in high school. But don't wait until then to find out what specific deadlines colleges have that you are interested in attending. Talk to your parents, school counselor, teachers, and friends for more information about the process. Stop by the credit union to learn about our share/savings plan and educational loans, too. |
Be Careful When You Are Surfing on the Internet!
Cyberspace is a great place to get information, "meet" new people, and buy things you want. And you can do it all anytime: 24/7/365. Just don't think everything's cool because your are doing it from the privacy of your room. Going online often seems anonymous; however, Web sites may gather your e-mail address or other information. They may record sites you've visited in a "cookie," which they can retrieve later, without your knowing about it. Check out the privacy and security features on your Web browser. For example, you can get a warning if a site tries to give you a cookie. Or you can refuse to accept cookies, although some sites won't load if you don't allow them. If you get unsolicited e-mail offering some way to make money or trying to sell you something, delete it. It is best if you don't respond. If you do, it verifies that your e-mail address is working and you will just get more advertising you don't want (called spam). Keep your personal information private and trust your instincts when you are surfing the Net. |
Baby-sitting Tips Baby-sitting can be a fun way to make money if you like kids. Here are some safety tips for baby-sitters:
- Lock the doors, and don't let anyone in unless you have been told to expect them.
- Ask where to find first aid supplies, flashlights, and a fire extinguisher.
- Know who to contact if you need help, such as a nearby neighbor.
- Find out when the kids should go to bed and if there are any house rules about video games, television shows, movies, and so on.
- Ask if the kids need to take any medications or vitamins, and if they are allergic to anything.
- Stay near smaller kids while they are in the bathtub; don't leave them alone, even for a second.

Spend Wisely What's better than a shopping trip to the mall? A smart shopping trip to the mall! The following tips can help you spend your money wisely:
- Watch for sales. Some stores offer big discounts on certain items, with the hope that once you are in the sore, you will buy other things, too. Think twice before you spend money on something you didn't plan on buying.
- Compare prices. The identical item can cost a lot less at one store than another. You can buy something else or add to your share account with the cash you save.
- Avoid impulse buying. Don't be tempted to buy items you don't need like candy, gum, and magazines that are placed near cash registers.

Six Steps Closer to Your First Car! Wouldn't it be awesome to have your own car? The following six steps could help you slip into the driver's seat.
- Park some cash for a down payment. Every dollar counts. Buying less CD or pair of shoes at the mall puts you closer to getting behind the wheel. Sock money away in your share account at the credit union and you won't be tempted to spend it.
- Drive carefully. Maintaining a good driving record shows that you can handle the responsibility of owning a car.
- Get good grades. Many insurance companies offer good student discounts to students who have a "B" or better grade point average.
- Do your car homework. Research different makes and models. Which ones get better gas mileage? Which ones are more reliable? Safer? How much do they cost? Figure out what your total costs will be including your car payment, insurance gas, and maintenance.
- Take some test drives. The, ask you parents/guardian for help with your final decision.
- Roll by the credit union. Find out what the interest rates are and how to qualify for a car loan.
